Resources for different teaching strategies.

As an teacher your classroom is your environment. You know what works and what doesn't work, you are familiar with the strategies that are effective for teaching within that environment and how to adapt these to the needs of different groups of students and different types of subjects. It is this knowledge that you can take and adapt to the use of technology in learning today.

So what are these teaching strategies? You may call them something else, but I am sure you will find most of the strategies that you use in the classroom in following list. If not please add to the list yourself.

  • Lecture/Exposition - this covers any time that the educator explains material to students, often while they take notes.
  • Research/Investigation - something that will be done regularly in a classroom situation and covers a situation where you ask students to research or investigate a subject, using a variety of possible resources.
  • Stimulus - a way of interesting/firing the imagination of students by using materials such as written or video case studies, films, texts, images etc. as the starting point for activities or discussion.
  • Group discussion/Team work/Working with others - discussions on a topic between students not necessarily always moderated by the tutor or group activity in which an end product is realised. If carried out with small groups the results may be reported back to class in plenary session.
  • Demonstration/Exhibition/Illustration -showing pupils how to carry out usually a practical activity, before they attempt this for themselves.

So how can we integrate online resources with each of these teaching strategies? The undernoted is not meant to be exhaustive but merely an indication of how you could supplement the different strategies. As an experienced educator many of these techniques will be very familiar to you.
